The Department of Surgery was started
in the K.E.M. Hospital in 1967. Dr.P.K.Bharucha
was Head of the Department. A little later,
Dr. Subhash Patki joined in the capacity
of consultant surgeon. Being a very versatile
and capable surgeon, Dr.Bharucha handled
every branch of surgery. He was at ease
in managing patients in general surgery,
orthopedics, lung diseases, mitral valve,
pediatrics and oncosurgery.
As the subspecialties started developing, he
had the foresight to invite specialists from
other disciplines of surgery. This began around
1971. Dr. Bharucha set the department on the
path of dedication, honest practice, good record
keeping and patient care of the highest order.
After he relinquished charge in the Department
of Surgery, Dr. Subhash Patki took over from
him till November 2000 when he had to stop working
due to failing health. Currently Dr. M.Y.Bapaye
is the Director of Surgery. The Department of
Surgery boasts of having on the staff specialists
providing service in every specialty of surgery.

Teaching and academic activities are an integral
part of the life of our consultants. Being attached
to the B.J. Medical College, hundreds of undergraduate
students have been taught at the KEM Hospital.
The Department of Surgery is recognized for
post-graduate training of MS, DNB & FCPS
candidates. Many of these have been encouraged
to go abroad for further training.
The training of residents' doctors working
towards their post graduate degrees consists
of seminars, case discussions and operative
techniques. The residents are taught operative
skills by way of workshops where animal gut
is used to teach suturing technique. Residents
perform operations always under the supervision
of a consultant surgeon. Many Clinical Research
projects are being conducted and KEM Consultants
are gaining recognition at National and International
levels.
