The Department of Neurology at KEM Hospital, Pune is one fo the oldest super-speciality departments in the city. It has been built up as a part of Medicine department by Dr. Pradeep Divate over the last 25 years.

THE TEAM

	Dr. Pradeep Divate, Head of Department MD (Medicine), DM (Neurology) Dr. Divate is one of the senior-most Neurolgist in the state & the first qualified DM Neurologiest in the city of Pune.
	Dr. Anand Alurkar, Interventioanl Neurologies MD (Medicine), DM (Neurology), DNB (Neurology), Fellowship in interventional Neuroradiology Dr. Alurkar is among a handful of Doctors & only the second Nerologiest in the country wiht formal training in Neurointerventional procedures.
	Dr. Nilima Bhalerao DNB (Medicine), PHd (Neurology) Dr. Bhalerao has keen interest in research & neuro-electrophysiology.

OUT-PATIENT SERVICES

The department provides daily outpatient services from Monday to Saturday (9.30 to 11.30 am in the Banoo Coyaji building). Each consultant has two OPD days.

	Nerve conduction studies & Electromyogram (NCV & EMG)
	Evoked potential studies (VEP, BERA, SSEP)

	Cerebral DSA (Angiography) & Neurointerventional procedures

INTERVENTIONAL NEUROLOGY

The highest number of Neurointerventional procedures in Maharashtra, apart from Mumbai, are carried out in KEM Hospital, Pune. About 150 DSAs & 50 Interventional procedures in a year (Carotid stenting, Intracranial stenting, Aneurysm coiling for aneurysms, Intra-arterial thrombolysis for acute stroke,Embolisation of AV-malformations & tumors etc) are carried out on a state of the art Phillips flat-panel Cathlab.

NEURO-ICU

A nine bedded dedicated Neuro-ICU functions as part of the Department of Intensive care. An acute-response team has been set up for administration of TPA for acute ischemic stroke.

ACADEMICS

Both Dr. Divate & Dr. Alurkar are recognised as postgraduate teachers for MD (Medicine) by the university of Pune. All three consultants take part in bedside teaching as well as Neurology clinics for resident Doctors.

RESEARCH

The unit also conducts research in the field of Neurology. Some of the ongoing research projects are :

	A phase III trial of Pramipexole ER in advanced Parkinson's disease
	A phase III trial of a nasal spray for Migraine prophylaxis
	A Phase I trial of Japanese Encephalitis vaccine in healthy volunteers.

FUTURE

The department aims to provide state of the art Neurology care at an affordable cost in the future too. A dedicated stroke unit and speciality OPDs like Epilepsy & Headache clinics are planned in the future.
