The department was started in the early 1970's by Dr. V.R.Pai, and was assisted by Drs. F.F.Wadia and Dr. K.M. Gangwal. They were helped by Drs. B.B. Gokhale (dermatology), Dr. M.K.Kale (pulmonology) and Dr. S.C.Pant (psychiatry). A 3-bedded ICU and in 1975 a one dialysis machine Renal Unit was added on. The department expanded by leaps and bounds in the early and late 80's with many more consultants joining on in internal medicine, as well as in many specialties like cardiology, nephrology, neurology, gastro-enterology, endocrinology, and intensive care.

The Nephrology unit expanded gradually as did the cardiology unit. Both have grown considerably over the past 2 -3 years to reach their present levels. The 3-bedded ICU has gradually given way to a 44-bedded ICU, which includes a 10-bedded coronary care unit and a 9 bedded Neuro Critical Care Unit. The pulmonary unit as well as the gastro-enterology and neurology units have kept pace with the changing trends, and the neurology unit is expected to follow the nephrology unit in getting accreditation from the DNB board for a post-doctoral degree.

Comprehensive care is offered to all patients and, with adequate backup from all ancillary departments, it is not necessary to refer the patients out of the hospital. All the services are offered under one roof. As the department is recognized for CPS, DNB and MD (Med), there is a large pool of residents to look after the patients needs and this is the best offered in this city.

The department offers Post Graduate Studies in M.D.(Gen Medicine),D.N.B.(Gen Medicine) and Post Graduate Diploma in C.P.S. (Medicine)
